Knowing your family history is important.

Knowledge is power.

Most of us know that we can reduce our risk of disease by living a healthy lifestyle. Eating a healthy, balanced diet, getting enough exercise and avoiding toxins like nicotine found in  tobacco use, can help you reduce your risk of developing health problems, but your family history and genetic makeup is one of the strongest influencers of your risk for developing serious illnesses and diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and strokes.

If your family has one or more of the following health risk indicators, you may want to do a deep dive into your family history to determine potential risks and preventatively consult your doctor, rather than wait until symptoms present themselves when additional testing and diagnostic imaging may become necessary.

Family members share genes most often visible in appearance and even sometimes apparent in their athletic abilities. Hidden among those genes, also lies risks for a genetic disease such as multiple sclerosis, cancer, and major organ diseases such as kidney and heart disease. All of these can be diagnosed through thorough screening and testing along with the use of diagnostic imaging such as an MRI. However, it’s important to understand that disease indicators can often be identified quicker if you have an in-depth understanding of your immediate family history and share that with your physician.
